SPECIAL EDUCATION

Special education support in a virtual independent study setting.

Compass Charter Schools provides special education support services in a virtual environment for scholars with IEPs. Services are based on each scholar’s IEP and are provided within the Compass independent study model.

Special education at Compass.

In today’s world, technology continues to influence instructional options for scholars and families. Compass Charter Schools is a virtual independent study charter school, and we provide special education support services in a virtual environment for scholars with IEPs.

Virtual Support Services

The Compass Special Education Program provides services for less than half the day through virtual, online services.

General Education Participation

Each scholar is assigned to a general education Supervising Teacher to provide participation in the general education curriculum and activities.

SERVICES

Specialized Academic Instruction and related services.

The Special Education Program includes Specialized Academic Instruction provided by CCS Special Education Instructors, called Education Specialists. Compass provides services by teachers with mild to moderate and moderate to severe credentials.

Specialized Academic Instruction is provided by Compass Education Specialists.

Related Services

Related services for speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychological services, and other related services are provided by certified nonpublic agencies under contract with CCS.

IEP SUPPORT

Case management and service scheduling.

Each scholar is assigned a case manager who is responsible for monitoring the IEP process.

Case Manager

The case manager may be the same person as the Education Specialist, Speech Therapist, or another CCS special education staff member.

Service Schedule

Scholars are provided a schedule for their services from the assigned therapist and/or Education Specialist during school hours.

New Enrollees

For new enrollees to CCS, the scholar is provided with an interim placement for 30 calendar days that is comparable to the last signed IEP from the last district or charter of attendance, unless CCS and the parent agree otherwise.

INDEPENDENT STUDY

California Department of Education rules.

The California Department of Education provides explicit rules regarding the admission of scholars with IEPs into an independent study program.

Independent study and IEPs

  • Special education scholars may not participate in independent study unless it is specified as an instructional method in their individualized education program, or IEP. EC Section 51745(c)
  • Independent study charter schools must enroll all learners who meet the enrollment requirements set in their charter.
  • For a learner who has an IEP and wants to participate in independent study, a determination as to whether independent study is appropriate must be made within thirty days and written into the IEP.
