Thousand Oaks, CA—The Mountain Empire Unified School District unanimously approved the renewal of the charter petition for Compass Charter Schools (Compass) of San Diego at its regularly scheduled board meeting on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. This decision continues the partnership between Compass and the district to serve scholars looking for educational opportunities tailored to their needs.

“We are thrilled that Compass Charter School will continue delivering high-quality education to its students, as it has consistently shown success in key academic areas,” shares Raquel Madden, CCSA Vice President, Southern California. “As seen on the California School Dashboard, Compass has achieved remarkable success with socioeconomically disadvantaged students, demonstrating a 21.4% increase in English Language Arts achievement. Proof that the unique learning opportunities they offer benefit the most vulnerable populations.”

Compass Charter Schools of San Diego was founded and granted its first charter in 2012. With a handful of scholars and teachers, Compass was determined to offer the community a personalized educational program different from those more commonly available. By providing a rigorous curriculum and dedicated staff, Compass is able to reach scholars who might otherwise fall through the cracks.

Regardless of personal situations or experiences, activities, or learning styles, Compass has been able to offer all scholars a place to learn and express themselves. Compass has continuously reflected upon and improved our educational program, opportunities for scholar and family engagement, and scholar/teacher interactions. We have refined best practices and contributed to the evolution of personalized learning through our participation in organizations such as the California Charter Schools Association, APLUS+, and The Charter Schools Development Center. Our diverse population of both scholars and staff allows for the sharing of varied backgrounds and experiences.

The board approved the charter renewal for another five-year term after a comprehensive review by district staff and comments from Compass scholars, parents, partners, and staff during their November Public Hearing. Compass currently serves nearly 900 scholars who reside in San Diego County and the surrounding counties of Imperial, Orange, and Riverside.

“It is a great honor to have our Compass Charter Schools of San Diego charter petition renewed by our Authorizer, the Mountain Empire Unified School District,” shares Liz Brenner, Compass Superintendent & CEO. “We are excited to have the opportunity to continue providing an engaging and robust educational experience to the scholars we serve throughout the region and look forward to growing these opportunities for our current and prospective scholars and their families.”
