Compass Charter Schools (Compass) celebrates and welcomes our new Superintendent and CEO, Elizabeth (Liz) Brenner! She brings warmth, expertise, and enthusiasm to our free public schools serving Los Angeles, San Diego, Yolo, and surrounding counties. We know you’re going to enjoy her spirit as much as we do.
Liz brings over 20 years of experience as a past teacher, vice principal, principal, director of education, chief academic officer, and chief development officer. She has extensive charter school experience and is a passionate advocate for equity in education.
Personalized Learning Is The Future
“What surprised me most so far in my first month at Compass is the sense of family and community, even in a virtual environment. There is so much connection among staff, in person and virtually, and I think the connection with teachers and families is just as surprising and beneficial,” said Liz.
“I truly believe that personalized learning is the future of education. It is evident that a ‘one size fits all’ approach does not work for many scholars and their families. The more I learn about the options that Compass offers, the more impressed I am about how truly unique this school is,” stated Liz in a Compass Chronicle article.
“I am so excited about the work being done at every level of this organization. Our commitment to providing a truly personalized learning environment for our scholars is evident in all we do.”
Evidence Compass Learning Models Work
Liz is learning a lot about Compass, fast. She visited the Orange County Learning Center (OCLC), where scholars enjoy our hybrid Options Program. Scholars attend classes two days a week at the center to work in Science, Social Studies, and Enrichment. Then they work with their learning coaches (parents) at home three days a week to dive deep into English and Math.
“The parents I met with told me how well this model works for them.”
Liz learned that this structure allows the learning coaches and scholars to focus on subjects without getting overwhelmed.
“The scholars love being with their peers and have formed long-lasting bonds with them over the years.”
Collaborative Community
“Our goal is for all scholars to be effective collaborators, innovators, community leaders, and confident learners so they will be successful in whatever path they choose.”
Inclusion & Diversity
“I want to reach more families so that our enrollment is more inclusive. I’m looking for ways to connect with all the regions we serve, especially the underserved demographics, and how to help the less represented be more successful. ”
“That’s one of the great things about Compass, there are no geographic boundaries. Scholars have more opportunities for interaction and connection with others who understand them. That ability to connect with and learn from each other is a huge benefit to being enrolled in Compass. Kids don’t have that level of opportunity in brick-and-mortar schools.”
The Sky’s the Limit
What we might not know about Liz is that she loves skydiving.
“I wanted to have that experience where it felt like I was flying. I did a tandem dive, so I was not by myself, but it’s so amazing when the ripcord is pulled and you’re flying. I was in San Diego too, so the view was amazing. I could see San Diego, Mexico, the ocean, and everything. I just love skydiving.”
“Thank you all for welcoming me to the Compass Family. I am honored to serve as your Superintendent and CEO. I look forward to working with all of you on our mission to inspire and develop innovative, creative, self-directed learners, one scholar at a time.”
Thank you, Liz! We’re excited to work with you at the helm and see what this new year brings.
