Thousand Oaks, CA – Compass Charter Schools (Compass) is proud to announce that California Credit Union has selected Compass teacher Abigail Terrell as a recipient of a $500 classroom grant for Compass. Abigail Terrell’s grant has been featured in SCV News and Morningstar. Terrell was chosen for her innovative approach to education and her commitment to serving a diverse population of students.

Terrell shares that teaching and learning have been her lifelong passions. As a teacher-researcher, she aims to continually learn and refine her pedagogy to better serve our increasingly diverse population. Terrell graduated from California State University San Marcos with a Master of Literacy, Reading, and Leadership. She has worked as Director of Education Programs at Carrot in New York, started her own handmade jewelry business, and as an education specialist. Terrell has served as a supervising teacher at Compass Charter Schools for over five years. Her motto is: Education = Access = Happiness.

“Supporting education is a key focus of California Credit Union Foundation’s mission, and we’re excited to support these teachers as they work to engage and inspire their students in new and creative ways,” said California Credit Union Foundation President Marvel Ford. “We hope these grants encourage our local educators to pursue innovative projects that spark a new passion in their students, which can make a life-long difference.”

As part of its commitment to helping educators create innovative learning opportunities for their students, the Foundation has provided ten grants of $500 each to underwrite class projects in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The credit union grants will fund diverse programs that illustrate the creativity and commitment teachers bring to their classrooms and communities.

Recipient Abigail Terrell shares, “It was so exciting and a wonderful surprise to be selected as a recipient of the credit union grant! I have wanted to start an enrichment program for the homeschool community for some time now. Learning is social, and many of our scholars would benefit from more time spent building relationships and learning together. The grant will make it possible to bring scholars ages pre-K through 8th grade together to play games, engage in literature circles, do some cultural cooking, and exercise their creativity with an art and maker space. I am so grateful for the resources to begin making this vision come true! A huge thank you to the California Credit Union!”
