THOUSAND OAKS, CA – Compass Charter Schools (CCS) announced today that Airis Yeung, a 7th grade scholar from La Verne, has been awarded 1st place in the MY HERO International Film Festival.
“A week before my last birthday party, my mom and I received a call that my friend Alpha had been hit by an SUV,” said Yeung. “I sold some of my art projects to raise money for Alpha’s operations, however, I wanted to do more. Knowing that music has helped him and his family heal through many tragedies, including the death of his younger brother, I thought that making a movie about him and music would cheer him up.”
The MY HERO International Film Festival is a festival open to both professionals and scholars to shine a spotlight on worldly heros. Airis’ documentary spotlighted her friend, Alpha, and how music has inspired and guided him through difficult times in his life.
“Airis is such a unique, gifted, and talented young lady! She has a passion for everything she does, whether it be her music, singing, filmmaking, language learning, or science exploration,” shared Wendy Sottile, educational facilitator. “She is truly driven by her desire to learn and know more about the world around her.”
Airis has taken 1st place in three other film festivals and has already completed research for her second documentary which will begin filming soon. While balancing her passion and school work has been challenging, Airis feels lucky to have teachers at CCS that always encourage and support her, as well as the flexibility to complete school work when it best fits her schedule.
“Congratulations to Airis on her achievement,” shared J.J. Lewis, Superintendent & CEO. “It is inspiring to see how she has supported her friend by focusing on his passion. I am very proud of Airis’ hard work, and wish her continued success along her educational journey as well as with her future films.”
