Compass Charter Schools Names their
December 2021 Scholars of the Month
Thousand Oaks, CA – Compass Charter Schools is proud of its scholars and uses its Scholar of the Month program to recognize their accomplishments. The program also ties into the Compass core values of achievement, respect, teamwork, integrity, and communication. Scholars are nominated by teachers and staff for their academic excellence, work ethic, leadership skills, and virtual involvement and selected by the leadership team for the monthly honor.
Compass Charter Schools of Los Angeles (serving the counties of Los Angeles, Kern, San Bernardino, and Ventura):
Online Elementary School Scholar of the Month: Melinna H. of Sylmar
“Melinna works diligently and independently to complete her work,” shares Crystal Chavez, an elementary school teacher. “She takes excellent ownership over her learning and adjusts well to this new learning environment. Melinna works hard to improve her skills and is always engaged in learning labs with her classmates.”
Options Elementary School Scholar of the Month: Flint U. of Burbank
“Flint has modeled the value of achievement for the past year, “ shares Sandy Lee, a supervising teacher. “Learning to read did not come easily for Flint, but he persevered and practiced echo reading, choral reading, and other research-based methods to increase his fluency. Today, in second grade, he is reading at grade level and enjoying reading without prompting. I am proud of his endurance, grit, and success! Way to go, Flint!”
Online Middle School Scholar of the Month: Raven C.L. of Studio City
Raven is a very organized scholar and has quickly learned the ropes at Compass. She reaches out for help, is consistent in her attendance, and submits work submissions on time. In addition, Raven communicates clearly, and her emails are detailed and convey her message.
Options Middle School Scholar of the Month: Carter A. of Pomona
“Carter shows integrity through his hard work and attention to detail,” shares Holly Dong, a supervising teacher. “Whether he is submitting a science essay, an engineering project, or sharing his Legos with his classmates, Carter consistently shows that he cares about the quality of his work.”
Online High School Scholar of the Month: Isabel L. of Sun Valley
“Isabel has made leaps and bounds in academic performance over the past year and has done a beautiful job of advocating for herself to advance academically! Well done!” Shared Terry El Massry, a high school teacher.
Options High School Scholar of the Month: Tania T.E. of Baldwin Park
“Tania is a very motivated and enthusiastic learner,” shares Ruth Chavez- Rivera, a supervising teacher. “She takes great pride in her work and has a great work ethic. Tania happily participates in all Compass’ opportunities, including tutoring, live synch sessions, and scholar support. She has become an independent scholar and has grown academically in all areas, especially as an English Language Learner. Tania volunteers and is always ready to share her presentations and participate in live sessions. She is truly a pleasure to have as a scholar.”

Online Elementary School Scholar of the Month: Nash S. of San Diego
“Nash has come to almost every learning lab,” shares Katherine Hooper, an elementary school teacher. “He is on track with progress in all of his subjects. Nash has learned patience in learning to raise his hand during class. Great job, Nash!”
Options Elementary School Scholar of the Month: Andrea Nicole B. of El Cajon
“Nicole has made tremendous improvement this year,” shares Jan Marquez, a supervising teacher. “I am very proud of her; she has taken ownership of her learning and truly exemplifies the ARTIC core values of Compass, in achievement, respect, and communication. Nicole is always on time during our synchronous live instruction and connection meetings and is prepared to learn and participate. She works consistently on her suggested programs, such as Freckle and Power Up, and she is open to feedback for self-improvement. Nicole is a sweet, kind, respectful, and innovative learner. She loves reading, is always inquisitive, and recently discovered a love for writing! Nicole truly deserves to be a scholar of the month!”
Online Middle School Scholar of the Month: Lidia M. of San Diego
“Lidia is a wonderful scholar who actively participates in her learning labs,” shares Erica Angelo, a middle school teacher. “She is willing to join in and collaborate with other scholars. In addition, she can make others smile and feel great about themselves. Lidia has the traits of a true ARTIC scholar!”
Options Middle School Scholar of the Month: Taia S. of Laguna Beach
“Taia goes above and beyond in learning in every possible way,” shares Dana Mendez, a supervising teacher. “She is creative, takes the initiative, is responsible, kind, and respectful. In addition, she puts in time beyond a typical school day to ensure that she learns what is needed, while fitting in a tremendous amount of extracurricular activities!”
Online High School Scholar of the Month: Orion S. of Temecula
“Orion’s consistent work ethic and motivation to challenge himself has stood out since he joined Compass last year,” shares Terry El Massry, a high school teacher. His diligence is paying off, and his confidence as a learner shines!”
Options High School Scholar of the Month: Jared K. of Mission Viejo
“Jared is a very motivated and dedicated student,” shares Nicole Bellanca, a supervising teacher. “He has shown great initiative already this school year. Jared addition, she takes control of his future success by uploading his work samples weekly. The quality of work that Jared provides shows that he is deserving of an achievement award for this month. He is also one of the most respectful scholars that I have had. Jared is always polite and completes requests without hesitation. I am proud and honored to nominate Jared for this month’s scholar of the month.”

Online Elementary School Scholar of the Month: Oscar F. of Windsor
“Oscar is a wonderful scholar who excels in his Accelerate Ed curriculum and comes prepared to our live synchronous sessions,” shares Joyce Popelar, an elementary school teacher. “He continues to put forth his best effort and strives to do his best. He is a joy to have in class and a wonderful scholar!”
Options Elementary School Scholar of the Month: Delilah B. of San Pablo
“Delilah attends most of my live sessions and is always ready to participate,” shares Holly Dong, a supervising teacher. “She takes pride in her work and is eager to learn new things. She is such a joy to have, and I just love her passion for reading, science, and classical music.”
Online Middle School Scholar of the Month: Eliana O. of Brentwood
“Elliana is an exceptional scholar who displays Compass’s core value of respect by consistently showing respect for her teachers via Gchat and positive participation in learning labs. She is a pleasure to have in class.” Shared Erin Thomson, a middle school teacher.
Options Middle School Scholar of the Month: Victoria R. of Benecia
“Victoria is self-motivated in improving her math scores,” shares Yoli Wiederrich, a supervising teacher. “She works hard, not only with her learning coach on her lessons but also attending weekly tutoring with me and tutoring with the Compass tutors. I do not doubt that she will continue to work until she is as strong in math as she is in her other subjects. She communicates well when she needs help and takes pride in learning the material.”

Options High School Scholar of the Month: Ramona H. of Petaluma
