Thousand Oaks, CA – CCS announced that it will implement the AVID College Readiness System for the upcoming 2017-18 school year. AVID is a philosophy that provides teachers a proven solution for systematically increasing academic rigor, accelerating the performance of scholars and creating engaging learning environments.

“Compass Charter Schools is proud to become an AVID school,” said J.J. Lewis, CCS President & CEO. “AVID will provide our teachers the additional support, guidance and resources they need to help scholars become innovative, creative and self-directed learners.”

As part of becoming an AVID school, CCS selected Crystal Rubnerth to serve as the AVID Coordinator, and manage the implementation of the system. She will ensure effective goal setting, performance management, training and development, and will work collaboratively to strengthen the performance of CCS. CCS also selected Julia Frost to serve as the AVID Electives Instructor. She will monitor and support scholar achievement, implement appropriate academic supports, and promote the use of WICOR strategies. Both are current high school teachers.

“I am honored to serve as the AVID Coordinator for Compass Charter Schools,” said Rubnerth. “I am fully dedicated to successfully implementing the AVID program and philosophy at CCS. I look forward to providing teachers with additional guidance and support to prepare AVID scholars for college and emphasize the college-going culture at CCS.”

The AVID College Readiness System uses proven practices to prepare scholars for success in college, and a career, especially scholars traditionally underrepresented in higher education. As an AVID school, CCS will implement new, research-based strategies to further develop scholars’ critical thinking, literacy, math skills and much more to improve their academic results.
