THOUSAND OAKS — Today Compass Charter Schools (CCS) released a public statement regarding its special education services to remedy any false claims or accusations made about the program on social media and various other outlets.
CCS maintains that it complies with all state and federal laws related to the provision of special education instruction and related services. This includes the proactive identification of scholars with special needs (“Child Find”); testing and assessment of scholars suspected of having a disability; working with Learning Coaches and Educational Facilitators to develop and implement an Individualized Education Program (“IEP”) or Section 504 Plan for each qualified scholar; and ensuring qualified scholars are provided a free appropriate public education (“FAPE”) in the least restrictive environment (“LRE”). CCS also monitors each IEP and Section 504 Plan to ensure scholars are effectively working toward their goals.
“It has come to my attention that throughout this summer there have been a significant number of posts on various social media outlets regarding Compass Charter Schools’ special education programs and services,” said J.J. Lewis, Superintendent and CEO. “This communication is not vetted by Compass and often includes inaccurate or misleading information. I want to take this opportunity to provide our school’s community with information regarding how Compass serves scholars with disabilities.”
CCS recognizes its legal responsibility to ensure that no qualified person with a disability is, on the basis of disability, excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of, or otherwise be subjected to discrimination under, any school program. The school also understands and agrees that all children deserve and have access to our charter schools, and no scholar is denied admission to CCS due to the nature, extent, or severity of his/her disability or due to the scholar’s request for, or actual need for, special education services.
CCS is a virtual independent study charter school serving scholars in grades TK-12. CCS and its teachers are dedicated to offering scholars throughout California access to quality online and homeschool educational programs to meet their busy schedules and unique needs.
CCS believes that a well-connected, supportive community is an essential part of successful learning for scholars and continues to provide inclusive programs and services in an effort to play a leading role in California’s public school community.
