THOUSAND OAKS — Compass Charter Schools (CCS) is proud to announce that it is joining the celebration of National School Counseling Week, and celebrating its school counselors starting today, Monday, February 5. The Counseling Services Department at CCS currently consists of six credentialed counselors and a records technician who are passionate about supporting scholars’ academic growth, mental and emotional well being, and college and career planning.

“The Counseling Services Department at CCS is truly committed to helping scholars achieve success,” said Debra Stephan, Counseling Services Manager. “They dedicate countless hours and resources to guide scholars on their academic journey, support social and emotional growth, and facilitate college and career planning. I am so grateful for their hard work and commitment to supporting our scholars and their families during their educational journey at CCS.”

CCS is a virtual independent study charter school serving grades TK-12 with a scholar enrollment of over 1,000. In 2012, CCS began with a small team of educators in Southern California committed to providing a safe, family-centered alternative to the traditional brick and mortar school for scholars throughout the state. While CCS has evolved over the years, the desire to provide excellent educational options has remained strong with our online and homeschool programs. Over the past five years, we have educated the highly gifted, the bullied, the athlete, the actor, the academically-challenged, the chronically ill, and many other scholars who sought a personalized educational experience outside traditional classroom walls.

“The counselors at CCS are an integral part of our scholars’ positive Compass experience,” shared J.J. Lewis, CCS President & CEO. “Our counselors go above and beyond to meet the unique needs of our scholars and learning coaches. I know I am speaking for our entire Compass community when I say that we are so grateful for our school counselor’s hard work, passion and dedication to making a positive difference in each of our scholars’ lives!

National School Counseling Week is sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and focuses on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems. It highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping scholars achieve school success and plan for a successful future.

“School counselors work with all scholars to remove barriers to learning by addressing scholars’ academic concerns, career awareness in post-secondary options and social/emotional skills,” said Kwok-Sze Wong, Ed.D., ASCA executive director. “Comprehensive school counseling programs help to increase scholar achievement and provide a much-needed resource for scholars, parents, teachers and administrators. School counselors are integral to scholar success.”

The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) is a worldwide nonprofit organization based in Alexandria, Va. Founded in 1952, ASCA helps school counselors guide their scholars toward academic achievement, career planning and social/emotional development to help today’s scholars become tomorrow’s productive, contributing members of society. ASCA has a network of 50 state associations and a membership of more than 34,000 school counseling professionals.
