Thousand Oaks, CA –  Compass Charter Schools (CCS) announced scholars Ryan B., an eighth-grade scholar from Silverado, Caleb H., an eighth-grade scholar from Placentia, and Jacob C., a fourth-grade scholar from Fountain Valley, as the winners of its inaugural National Geographic Bee. The event was held on Thursday, January 25 at CCS’ Orange County Learning Center (OCLC) in Santa Ana. The winners were selected by process of elimination during twelve rounds of competition.

“Congratulations to all of the scholars who participated in our National Geographic Bee,” said Rebecca MacAlpine, Scholar Engagement Coordinator. “Our scholars are truly advanced with an impressive knowledge of important landmarks and locations in the United States and across the world. I am so grateful for all of the amazing support that our scholars, parents, and staff showed to those who participated in this event. I am so proud of our supportive and encouraging Compass community!”

The National Geographic Bee was organized into seven preliminary competition rounds and five final rounds. All scholars at the OCLC in fourth through eighth-grade participated, a total of more than 60 scholars. During the preliminary rounds, each scholar was asked to answer a series of multiple-choice questions during their History class. The five final rounds of the competition were held live in the OCLC’s main hall where the remaining scholars were asked to recite their answers to geography questions out loud. The event’s overall winner, Ryan B., will move on to the next round, which is a test to qualify for the state round. The State Bee will be held on Friday, April 6 in Sacramento. The winning scholars will receive a medal and a special mention in the Compass Chronicle, CCS’ school newsletter.

“Congratulations to Ryan, Caleb, and Jacob for winning our inaugural National Geographic Bee,” said J.J. Lewis, CCS President & CEO. “We challenged all of the participating scholars to put their knowledge of important locations and landmarks to the test in front of our Compass community. These scholars, along with all of the competition’s participants, met that challenge and have a done an amazing job sharing their knowledge and inspiring their peers. I know I am speaking for all of our Compass community when I share that we are so proud of everyone’s hard work, and wish Ryan the best of luck as he prepares for the next qualifying round!”

CCS is proud of all the participating scholars and those who supported the contestants. CCS continues to offer scholars the opportunity to play a leading role in their school community and encourages them to demonstrate their knowledge and skills, and share their school spirit.
