Scholar engagement is essential in any school, at every grade level. Providing a diverse, inclusive, and engaging learning environment for grades TK-12 is part of The Gold Standard of Personalized Learning of Compass Charter Schools (Compass). Our tuition-free public schools, serving Yolo, San Diego, Los Angeles, and surrounding counties, offer a range of enrichment activities through Virtual Scholar Workshops. In addition to gaining valuable knowledge and skills, scholars benefit psychologically as well.
“I love Virtual Workshops at Compass Charter Schools. I have had so many fun experiences with the workshops. I love all of them, but a few of my favorites have been Baketivity, Heritage months, and Making Toys for Cats in a Shelter. I loved learning about all of the different heritages. I look forward to many more exciting workshops this year.” -Emma Anne R.
What are examples of engaging scholar workshops?
Throughout the year, we host a variety of virtual education workshops that invite scholars to become curious explorers and discoverers of the world they live in. Some notable examples for the Compass 2023/24 school year include (but are not limited to):
Cartooning in the Classroom with the Charles Schulz Museum. This live, interactive experience includes an introduction to Cha
rles M. Schulz, Peanuts, and the Schulz Museum, followed by a guided drawing of several of Schulz’s most popular characters.
Spy School 101 (TK-6). Scholars use their observation skills to spot threats and opportunities, work as a team to reveal secrets, and think like a gadget-maker to solve problems in this skill-based program with real-world stories.
Community Service days include: Paracord Key Chains for Veterans through Operation Gratitude, Lunch Bag Decorating to donate to food banks, and Decorating Cards for Hospitalized Kids.
Heritage Months include: National Hispanic Heritage Month, First Nations Heritage Month, Asian Pacific Heritage Month, and Jewish American Heritage Month.
What does online scholar engagement mean?
In education, scholar engagement defines the level of active involvement and connection to their personal learning journey. Encouraging our scholars to explore their interests and passions through unique, safe experiences, Compass Virtual Scholar Workshops cover a wide range of topics and foster personal growth.
How do scholars benefit from engagement activities?
Participating in Virtual Scholar Workshops provides scholars with numerous psychological benefits. Research has shown that engagement in enrichment activities fosters a sense of belonging and connection, boosts self-confidence, and promotes overall well-being. These workshops offer a platform for scholars to showcase their talents, express their creativity, and interact with like-minded peers. By engaging in these activities, scholars develop a sense of accomplishment, community, and a deeper appreciation for their own abilities.
